JoungHee Seo: Time Traveler
Galerie Pici Seoul
I close my eyes and walk quietly into the gaps of other unknown spaces in the painting.
JoungHee Seo
In JoungHee Seo’s Time Traveler series, she collages materials and uses scraping techniques to recount memories during her travels throughout the world. The materials that she uses such as fabric and reflective mirrors references shapes of ponds and trees that she observed along the way. The busy scenes cause Seo to pause and reflect, but her recurring figure that she places on a bicycle symbolizes the artist’s never ending journey in spaces that remain mysterious and unknown. By placing herself on the bicycle, she has the ability to interact with, and discover, these unknown spaces that she missed within her own reality.
Fabric: Cutting out shapes within the canvas, Seo collages and covers them up with mesh fabrics that act as a net to capture any element that she may have missed in her reality. She’s retracing her steps, while adding new interpretations through abstract shapes and layered textures.
Figure & Bicycle: Tiny in scale, Seo includes a small female figure throughout her mixed media paintings. Typically sitting or biking, the woman represents the artist traveling through different environments, journeying through her memories and observing her version of a super-reality.
Repeated Shapes: Seo incorporates patterns using repeated circles, squares, rectangles, made out of different materials in a range of sizes. These shapes are clustered together to outline larger forms that symbolize landmarks throughout her exploration of the unknown.
JoungHee Seo lives and works in Seoul and continuously shows work internationally. Time Traveler is part of an ongoing series which follows the artist’s life journey.
