Galerie Pici is pleased to present a solo exhibition of paintings by Korea-based artist JungMi Kim.
JungMi Kim explores the unconscious mind through a series of different approaches. She begins by drawing connections through mapping techniques similar to urban planning, seeking to identify expressions of desire and despair. By using methods from surrealist automatism, Kim removes the conscious mind, setting the stage for her act. The artist invites the viewer into her extreme reality. Focusing on the unconscious expression using paint drips, Kim attempts to construct a feast through energetic colors and layers of fantasy. Allowing the paint to drip on its own, it creates a marble-like swirling effect that ebbs and flows.
The paintings in this exhibition are pieces of a larger dialogue that simultaneously interact and juxtapose with one another. These paintings depict the results of the artist’s release of control, tapping into unconscious thoughts and feelings to reveal the consumption of the mind.
JungMi Kim currently lives and works in Seoul. She continues to show work internationally and participates in art fairs throughout Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Basel, and Singapore. A Feast of the Unconscious is part of an ongoing series which follows the artist’s life journey.
