JungMi Kim: A Feast of the Unconscious

May 6 - May 18, 2021
Galerie Pici Seoul

“In the digital society, an analog lifestyle is seen as a necessary element of modern society, and the meaning is conveyed as a feast of the unconscious.” - JungMi Kim

Galerie Pici is pleased to present a solo exhibition of paintings by Korea-based artist JungMi Kim.

JungMi Kim explores the unconscious mind through a series of different approaches. She begins by drawing connections through mapping techniques similar to urban planning, seeking to identify expressions of desire and despair. By using methods from surrealist automatism, Kim removes the conscious mind, setting the stage for her act. The artist invites the viewer into her extreme reality. Focusing on the unconscious expression using paint drips, Kim attempts to construct a feast through energetic colors and layers of fantasy. Allowing the paint to drip on its own, it creates a marble-like swirling effect that ebbs and flows.

The paintings in this exhibition are pieces of a larger dialogue that simultaneously interact and juxtapose with one another. These paintings depict the results of the artist’s release of control, tapping into unconscious thoughts and feelings to reveal the consumption of the mind.

JungMi Kim currently lives and works in Seoul. She continues to show work internationally and participates in art fairs throughout Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Basel, and Singapore. A Feast of the Unconscious is part of an ongoing series which follows the artist’s life journey.

Lively Colors: Striking colors of orange, yellow, blue, red, pink, and purple cover Kim’s paintings blending into one texture. Her vibrant use of color maps out stages of different moods and varying energies, to identify the subconscious part of the mind.

Surrealist Automatism: Kim seeks to uncover the unconscious world by removing any conscious control during her drip process. She attempts to explore the cross section of disparate minds in order to connect one another through an intimate interaction. As each stroke is painted with equal significance, the suppressed world comes to light and creates a universal exchange with the collective psyche.

All-over Painting: Kim begins by creating a base with a marble effect that blends and swirls the paints. She then applies the paint by dripping it across the canvas, taking cues from abstract expressionist painter Jackson Pollock. Intersecting all across the canvas, the lines move up and down and side to side creating a labyrinth-like landscape. She layers these colors and lines by dripping the paint in various directions.
