Shinduk Kang:

Pink Era

Email Share

Korean artist Shinduk Kang (b.1952) explores the expressive qualities of abstract shapes and figures across a broad practice that encompasses works on paper, prints, sculptures, video, and fabric installations. Inherent in her works are mesmerizing and meditative, repetitive elements in rhythmic compositions that radiate positive energy.

Her new 2021 lenticular series revisit her pink era. Is this a reflection of her past or a start of a new beginning? If we consider it to be both, we can examine her pink florals and vibrant rooms as symbols of her cyclical celebration of life.

Shinduk Kang, seated with her daughter on her lap, poses in a full pink dress, embracing her new life. At only a few months old, the two are pictured here on August 6, 1979, showing signs of a new bond forming.

Shinduk Kang has spent the last year taking seasonal changes into consideration with her new 2021 lenticular series. She’s incorporated more shades of pink than ever before, however, this is not her first relationship with pink. Kang found her love for the color in the early 1980’s while experiencing the unique joys of motherhood. This shift in lifestyle garnered a new interest in lightness, where she was able to appreciate the delicacies of innocence, childhood, and rapid changes.

Her love of flowers, as evident in her large body of work, connects the origin of the word pink to her still life subjects. Her reintroduction of pink reflects the artist’s desire to emphasize the cyclical nature of human experiences.

Kang’s viewers are never alone when looking at her floral arrangements, as they look back at you and generate memories near and far. It could be from childhood, a past life, or a prominent time in one’s life that they become reminded of in an instant. Lilies are a sign of rebirth and purity. Their elegant, trumpet-shaped petals exudes a harmonious presence. Any difficulties or challenges are erased through the presence of these flowers. They give hope to new beginnings and purity for the future.

The very nature of this printing style adds variation and depth with a surprise twist on its effect. Push and pull is a recurring theme for Kang’s lenticular works. From one side it exudes a bright energy. On another side, with a change in position, there is a shift in tone toward a pensive one. Unable to decide between different thoughts, the change in color explores variations on fantasy versus reality.
