Ran Hwang

Korean, b.1960

Ran Hwang is a New York-based artist known for her intricate wall installations from buttons, beads, pins, and threads. In her early series, Korean Vase, Hwang traces the contours of different kinds of traditional Korean vases, hammers hundreds of pins into the canvas around the outline, then loops yards of thread through the pins to fill the negative space.

Hwang’s work is the public collections of the Brooklyn Museum, New York; Christian Dior, Paris; Hammond Museum, North Salem, NY; among others.
